The Outcomes tool in Engage allows administrators a way to identify and connect learning outcomes to activities or initiatives in your site, including organization memberships, event attendance, and holding positions. Outcomes are measured by users' exposure to these various experiences. The Outcomes tool also allows users to see their level of exposure to these different outcomes in their Involvement Record.
Creating learning outcomes
From the Users dropdown menu of your Admin view, select Outcomes.
Here you will see a list of any learning outcomes created by your community. Click +Create Outcome at the top to add a new outcome.
Identify the name and a description of the outcome. Examples might include Collaboration, Effective Communication, or Social Responsibility. You can create these to reflect the outcomes of your office, department, or institution.
Click Create Level to add outcome levels, if applicable. Levels create a tier system for your outcomes and might, for example, include "Novice," "Intermediate," and "Advanced" or "Bronze," "Silver," and "Gold." For each level, you can associate a point value that users will have to earn before they can move to the next level. These "points" will be assigned to individual organizations, events, and positions. For example, you might say that once a user is exposed to activities adding up to 10 points, they will move from a "Novice" in that outcome to an "Intermediate."
Click Create when you are finished. Repeat these steps for every learning outcome you want to build.
Assigning learning outcomes
After your learning outcomes are created, the important piece is to assign them to activities within your site! To the right of each outcome, click Assign.
You will see the name and description of that outcome, along with an "Outcome Multiplier." The multiplier allows you to place more exposure weight on certain experiences. For example, attending a one-time event might have a multiplier of 1 (worth 1 point), while attending a leadership conference might have a multiplier of 5, making it worth 5 points. You can assign the outcome to organizations, events, and positions.
Organizations
Click the Organizations tab to assign the outcome to organization membership. Enter the multiplier, select the organizations based on their organization category, and then select Assign Outcomes. For each outcome, you can only assign one multiplier to the organizations you select.
Event
Click the Event tab to assign the outcome to event attendance. Simply enter the multiplier you want to assign and click the green plus sign to the left of the event. You will see the event populate under "Assigned Events" with its corresponding multiplier value.
Position
Click the Position tab to assign an outcome to an organization position. You will first select the organization category, then the organization, and then the position. Note: you cannot assign outcomes to position templates. You can only assign them to individual positions within organizations. For each outcome, you can only assign one multiplier to the positions you select.
Viewing outcomes exposure as a student
As a user, there are two primary ways you can see the outcomes you are being exposed to. First, a user can visit their user drawer section by clicking on their photo in the top right hand corner of the site. Then, a user can click on the Membership History or Event History. For each individual listing, any outcomes attached to that activity will be displayed when the details of the activity are expanded.
A user can also view their outcomes exposure chart in their Involvement Record/Co-Curricular Transcript. As an admin, you can see if you have enabled the exposure chart by going to the Admin view, Users, and then Transcript Customization. Scroll down to see the check box next to "Display Outcome Exposure Chart." If you choose to display this, you can also give it a name, a description, and a chart color.
When a user accesses their involvement record with the outcomes chart displayed, they will see a chart resembling the following on their record. This chart showcases the user's level of exposure to the various outcomes defined within your site.
